I [Minna] came home from Belgium last Sunday. What a nice visit it was. I was spending Wednesday in Brussels, then one day in the city of diamonds, namely in Antwerp. No diamonds for me but a lot of nice memories. I like Antwerp because there is both old and modern style there. A tip of a hotel for those travellers who like scandinavian modernism: hotel Banks. This small and quite new hotel is furnished with a minimalistic and white style. Finnish design is well represented: the famous Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto is present there and there are some other dinnerwares from Iittala too: Teema, Ultima Thule, Origo and Artik. The hall of the Banks hotel reminds me of a gallery with all the modern paintings on the walls. And the beautiful cathedral of Antwerp is also present: if lucky enough one can see - and hear - it through the hotel room window.

During this visit I had a chance to spend four days in Herentals, in kennel Oochigea's. What a nice visit, thanks to Antoinette, Jos & the whippets. Walking with the dogs, taking care of the puppies and nice moments of talking and visiting some shops. I loved it. The weather was once more exceptionally good in Belgium. There was rain only on Sunday. Shadee (Oochigea's Shadee) was sleeping on my lap during the car drives. Bounty (Oochigea's Bacillius) was wearing her new champion jacket, a Belgium flag jacket made in Finland. The old black & white ladies Pepsi (Oochigea's Uvangelis) and Cola (Oochigea's Vanschaï) were also wearing their new jackets which we decided to call haute couture de la Finlande. Thank you to Anne Saastamoinen for these nice jackets. Spooky Girl (Oochigea's Yssentys) was sleeping under my arm during the nights. No nightmares for me when Spooky was there :)

And the puppies. Beautiful and sweet whippet puppies who seem to be very happy and satisfied with their lives. A lot of hugs and kisses. It was so nice to take care of these sweeties. Mother whippet Sally (Oochigea's Ephallius) took so fantastically care of her pups. A mother of eight puppies needs a lot of patience when all the pups are hungry and asking for milk at the same time :) The Grand Old Mama of kennel Oochigea's, namely Pepsi was taking care of the puppies too. It was so nice to be a kennel girl in Oochigea's.

There was a nice surprise waiting for me in Belgium. I enjoy visiting tracks in other countries and this time it was expected that this would not be possible because there are no racing events nor practise at this time of the year. But luckily there was an annual mussel feast - a very popular event - at the clubhouse of the track of Beringen. How nice! I was very pleased to meet Belgian racing people and whippet friends. The mussels I didn't touch ... :) On Sunday I had a chance to visit Anja, Henri & their whippets in Tauranga kennel. A lot of kisses from Fabio (Tauranga Fabregas) & Torres (Windwalker Tough Company) and some nice small talk with Bryan (Tauranga Corrado). Tauranga Fharashja had two sweet and beautiful puppies, age two weeks. Thanks to Anja & Henri for letting me visit their home. When I came home to Finland late in the evening my whippet girls were very curious to find out with whom I had talked to during my trip to Belgium.

I like visiting Belgium. Because of the whippet people, whippets, and the Belgian chocolate :) I took a lot of photos this time and did some videotaping too. I try to finish my Oochigea's video soon. It's been fun to make it.

Belgian people are very friendly and nice people. Always helping you when you ask for help. If you ask for help on the streets of Brussels to find a metro station people can even take you to the nearest station. Even old people try to help you, no matter about the language barriers. I'm still working on my flemish :D The best way to get to know Belgian people is to go among them and it's really worth while. Wonderful experiences.

Thank you to Antoinette, Jos & the whippets for making my visit in Belgium so fantastic. I really appreciate you letting me stay at your home and spending time with you and your lovely whippets. I want to thank you all the people at the clubhouse in Beringen too for the very nice evening. Henk is a great bartender. And thank you to Anja, Henri & the Tauranga whippets for allowing me to visit your home and to meet you. It made me very happy.

MaXwin Delaware returned home from Poland with her owner Sirpa Tiihonen (kennel Macarenan). Delaware was in Poland to meet a handsome black male called Blackbird de la Mouche Noire, owner Barbara Westrych from kennel Aviaticus. We hope that the meeting was successful and we wish good luck to Delaware.

We have a new kennel and country to be interviewed now, namely kennel Aviaticus from Poland. Thank you for Barbara Westrych for saying yes and thank you for Sirpa too.

16th November 2008

We had many fine racing achievements in year 2008 (see below). The Finnish Whippet Club names every year the Racing Whippet of the Year, the Veteran Racing Whippet of the Year and the Rookie Whippet of the Year. The Racing Whippet of the Year 2008 is MaXwin Delaware. A fantastic achievement of a bitch! The Veteran Racing Whippet of the Year 2008 is MaXwin Baxter (photo © Jaska Stenroos). The Rookie Whippet of the Year 2008 is MaXwin Fibi. We are very proud of these MaXwin achievements, it couldn't have gone any better :) And there were more fine MaXwin achievements too. We thank you for the owners of MaXwin whippets for their activity.

The racing and coursing events are over for this year now in Finland. The days are getting darker and darker, we wish to have some snow to get light here :) It's been raining a lot which is not that nice. Ten years ago - and not even ten years but a few years ago - we had winter here, raining in Belgium. Now it's raining both in Belgium and in Finland. I must say that I'd [Minna] rather be in rain in Belgium for a while than in rain in Finland :)

Along with the new interview series our site will be more international. We are having interviews from seven countries so far. And we are looking for new interviews all the time. Be aware, it's not over yet!

The first interview is ready and will be published on our site in December. Some of those we are going to interview have received their questions this weekend and the rest of the people will have their questions next weekend. The French speaking ones and a few special English speaking ones. I am letting people to have a lot of time to answer my questions so I think we'll be publishing most of the interviews in the winter and spring time. I [Minna] will be busy when all the answers are coming back to me :D This will be fun and I'm so happy people have been so positive towards my idea. Thank you all. I hope you don't have too much trouble with my questions :D

There are a lot of fanstastic racing photos on internet these days. Finnish people are active taking photos in the competitions. As you have probably noticed we have lately had some beautiful photos of the Belgian Gust De Leener on our site. You have probably also noticed that we have linked Picto Stijn photo site to our page. Stijn has fantastic photos on his site, absolutely great photos. Stijn has given me a permission to use his photos on our site which makes me very happy. Thank you Stijn. We will always mark the copyright to the photos on our site, especially when they are not ours. I want to thank you all for letting us to use your fabulous photos. It makes a big difference on our site! And it's nice to have photos of foreign whippets too, not only of Finnish whippets. A lot of beautiful photos of beautiful dogs. It's great that people are going through trouble taking photos in racing events and allowing others to use these excellent pieces of art. Thank you!

Our site is getting more international so the pressure to translate it in English is growing. We'll do the translation this winter, don't worry :)

October

24th October 2008

We have a new Archive page and you can find an Interview page there. We are starting a new series where we interview whippet racing people in Europe and outside Europe. The above mentioned pages will be translated in English in November.

The very first interview will be made of Oochigea's, Belgium. This choise was very obvious since the breeding of kennel MaXwin is based on Oochigea's Vanille. Oochigea's has such a great impact on our breeding! We have asked for interviews from other people as well, mainly from different countries in Europe. I must thank you all for saying yes and for beeing so enthusiastic with this idea. Thank you! We are very happy about this.

We are going to make interviews from other countries than Central European countries as well. We thank you Merril & David Woolf, kennel Kentfield from the USA for saying yes. You will have the questions soon :) Like all of you. We are trying to make an interview of the British racing too.

The idea is to get to know better different breeders, competitors and officials in different countries. And about their ideas about whippets and whippet racing or racing (and coursing) in general. The common denominator is the love for whippets and whippet racing.

I won't be telling all the names of the persons we are going to interview yet. We'll keep you on tenterhooks but I can tell you that all of them are keen on racing. And I'm sure you'll be interested in reading about them, their ideas and racing in their countries. We'll keep on asking more people to give us an interview. It's not over yet so be aware! :)

We'll have interviews of some Finnish people too. And we'll translate our racing pages in English this autumn - winter time. So you can read about Finnish racing too.

We thank you all for your interest in this!

Birthday party. MaXwin A litter [Binkie v.d. Spaarnemeute - Oochigea's Vanille] celebrated it's 7th birthday yesterday. We wish a happy birthday to Aida, Alysa, Ayscha & Aky-Lucky!

Whippet Team Race. Last weekend we had the last racing competition in Finland in 2008, namely the Whippet Team Race. Whippets were racing in teams and there were four whippets in one team. Whippets raced for their Clubs.

This year it was the Finnish Whippet Club team I who won the Team Race. This team was unbeatable. Kennel MaXwin was well represented in the winning team: MaXwin Baxter, MaXwin Fibi, Weikotin BB-King [a son of MaXwin Biancaneve] and Bennet aus dem Gnomenhain. There were MaXwin whippets in other teams also.

The whippet veterans raced for the Finnish Whippet Club Veteran Racing Championship at the same weekend. MaXwin Zippy who won the title last year came fourth this year. MaXwin Aky-Lucky was third.

Kennel MaXwin wishes all the veterans who have left the tracks for good now because of their age a very nice retirement days. The first litter of our Oochigea's Vanille (with our Chandhara's Xan-Tico, the Z litter) has left the tracks now. We thank these lovely whippets of ours for the fantastic time we have had with them at the tracks. Now we will enjoy the retiment days with them. Thank you Zazou, Zippy and Zico-Tico (and Zyklon who passed away in the spring 2008 due to an accident)!

Here are all the MaXwin times from the weekend:

  • M. Zippy (19.15)

Whippet Art. We have some new whippet art made in Finland at our home. We ordered a statue of our Oochigea's Vanille and some other works of art from Stiina Hovi, Tulikavio. We are more than happy with these works and are very proud to present them on our site:

We have also ordered a painting of our Vanille from France. Can't wait to see it ...!

September

29th September 2008

Oochigea's, Belgium. I [Minna] came home from Belgium last night. I had a very nice journey in the Belgium whippet world. It was so nice to see those grey haired half sisters of my Taika [Oochigea's Vanille] and other Oochigea's whippets. Shadee [Oochigea's Shadee] was sleeping on my lap during the car drives. What a lovely old lady. Old ladies Pepsi [Oochigea's Uvangelis] and Cola [Oochigea's Vanschai], half sisters of Taika too, were sleeping in my bed during the nights. I didn't have time to miss my whippet girls when having all these Oochigea's there. It seems that time flies when one looks at these grey haired whippets, Taika and her half sisters.

The weather was exceptionally good in Belgium: it was a little bit rain on Wednesday evening but at other times the sun was shining, though nights were dank. I had a little bit too much sun on my face in Beringen on Saturday. That's not so common at the end of September, I think.

There were a lot of discussion of whippets and a lot of whippets, especially Oochigea's. I had the chance to see e.g. the Derby d'Automne winners 2008 Oochigea's Chanel and Duncan van de Gouden Ster practising in Beringen on Saturday. What a wonderful track Beringen is. You are doing a good job there, Henk & the team.

Thank you to Antoinette, Jos & the whole Oochigea's pack for making my staying in Belgium so nice. I really enjoied my time with you. Thank you! You take good care of yourselves. And thank you to all of you I had a chance to meet and talk to. Thank you for Dominique for taking me to the airport and thanks for Gust for the photos in Beringen.

French Championship, Toulouse (FFSCL Pari Mutuel). The French Championship in FFSCL was raced during the weekend. You can see the results here.

23rd September 2008

I [Minna] will travel to Brussels tomorrow and will be spending a long weekend in Belgium. In Thursday evening I will be picked up from Brussels to Herentals by Antoinette Wiwenes. I will be staying at Oochigea's for a few days. How nice to meet Jos, Antoinette & their whippets.

I wish the weather will be fine, we will be going for a walk with the whippets in the woods and on the field on Friday. On Saturday we will be going to Beringen to train the whippets at track. We have a lot of whippets with us, experienced ones, young ones and "puppies". Antoinette has been organizing a nice meeting at the track and it's possible for me to see a lot of youngsters there. How nice :) On Sunday there is a competition in Son, Holland. Race between Belgium and Holland but we won't be going. But we have still whippets on our minds on Sunday too. I hope I won't be missing too much my own whippet girls. Hope not, having all these whippets of Antoinette & Jos there :)

So, a lot of happening in my whippet world next few days in Belgium. Je l'aime :)

Racing season 2008 has not yet ended but it's time to take a look at the calendar of 2009. The European Championship in racing will be raced 5.-6.9.2009 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The European Championship in coursing will be raced 25.-26.7.2009 in Mariánské Lazne, Czech. You can take a closer look at the calendar here (pdf).

18th September 2008

We are about to interview some racing people and publish these interviews on our site. The first interview will be done with Antoinette Wiwenes & kennel Oochigea's from Belgium. Antoinette is a well-known breeder who breeds racing whippets with her husband Jos Ruyssens. The breeding bitch of kennel MaXwin is Oochigea's Vanille - first Oochigea's whippet in Finland - so we are very happy to start with an Oochigea's interview. This interview will also be published in the Whippet Magazine of Finland in December and we'll publish the interview on our site only after that (at least in Finnish and in English).

We will have some more interviews and at least all the international interviews will be published also in English (and in Finnish, maybe in some other languages too). Thank you for those who have already promised us an interview. Beware you might be the next one we ask for !! :)

16th September 2008

The biggest dog magazine of Finland Koiramme-lehti wrote about the Finnish Championship in racing. MaXwin whippets were well represented both in the photos and in the text. In the first photo you can see the buttocks of MaXwin Blacktor. In the text it is written that whippet MaXwin Blacktor shows with what muscles the sighthounds are racing in the Finnish Championship. There is also a photo of the Finnish racing champion MaXwin Delaware (2007 and 2008, black dog) and MaXwin Baxter (2005, white dog). It is written that in the last years MaXwin whippets are used to win the Finnish championship. We are very proud of these amazing dogs of ours.

The lady whippet of kennel MaXwin Oochigea's Vanille made it as a cover girl at the age of 11. She poses on the cover of the cataloque of the Finnish veterinarians. Last year they had a Finnish cow on the cover. From a dog point of view this could be called a progress :D

We have ordered a statue of our lady whippet. This statue will be made in Finland. We have also ordered a painting of Vanille. It will be made in France. We are so enthusiastic to see these pieces of art of our lovely mama whippet.

You will see pictures of the statue and the painting on our site later.

14th September 2008

Whippets raced for the championship of the Finnish Whippet Club on Saturday at the Hyvinkää track (350 m). Kennel MaXwin won both the titles of the int. size whippets: MaXwin Delaware [Zorneagle's Fernando & MaXwin Zippy] was unbeatable in bitches (22.97). She is the best Finnish whippet in int. size ever in Finland, no question about that.

In males the winner of the day was MaXwin Fibi [Old Road's Chayenne & MaXwin Zippy] to whom this is the first year on the oval. The Championship of the Finnish Whippet Club was the first championship for Fibi in the adult games. This Puppy Derby Winner of 2008 had to really fight for the victory (23.41). MaXwin Baxter [Raptor du Pack de la Jet & Oochigea's Vanille] came close but could nothing against Fibi today (23.48).

There were a lot of MaXwin whippets on the oval this weekend. Our 6 litters were represented which was so fantastic to experience:
* Z (2000, Chandhara's Xan-Tico & Oochigea's Vanille)
* A (2001, Binkie v.d. Spaarnemeute & Oochigea's Vanille)
* B (2002, Raptor du Pack de la Jet & Oochigea's Vanille)
* D (2005, Zorneagle's Fernando & MaXwin Zippy)
* E (2005, Zorneagle's El Tequila & MaXwin Aida)
* F (2006, Old Road's Chayenne & MaXwin Zippy).

We want to congratulate all the MaXwin whippets and their owners. Thanks for the owners for their activity, without you we wouldn't have these great moments and achievements! We want also thank you for our int. friends, Oochigea's and other kennels and whippet owners for the possibility to make these great litters !

Friendship Race

During the World Championships and the European Championships weekends there are always raced a Friendship Race on Saturday. This is a race for the dogs that have not been able to make it in the WC and EC teams of their own country.

The weather has been a catatroph on Saturday: water, water, water. Dogs are swimming at the track. Cars are stucked in the mud. This is like a tradition in the champs: mother nature gives some extra challenge.

The whippets of kennel MaXwin have been racing fantastically in year 2008. We have won many title races including the most important one, namely the Finnish Championship (FCI), once again. We have also won the Finnish Championship in Greyhound Federation and the Finnish Veteran Championship (and some more). All these three champs are raced in one class, females and males together, not separated. This year it was MaXwin Delaware who won both the Finnish Championships and MaXwin Alysa who won the Veteran Championship. Super achievenements of female whippets.

We have listed our whippets and their achievenements in the title races in year 2008 below. The common denominator of the following whippets is Oochigea's Vanille, "Taika" who is the mother or the grandmother of these dogs.

For your information: the Star Sprinter Championship is the championship in 280 m in Finland. It does not mean the class of oversized whippets as is the case in Central Europe (sprinters). The results concern racing if not otherwise mentioned.
